Dumpster Diving for Canvas

Last night Russ and I went over to my dad’s house for dinner. My sister, who is in the process of moving out of my dad’s house, was scurrying around the house trying to pack up her things while we were over. Among them I noticed three large rolls of art. I asked her about them and she said she dumpster dived them, and that there were around two hundred pieces of crappy art on canvas.  Bless her little heart, she offered me one of the larger rolls.

Thrilled, I decided to look through it first to see if any of the art was worth saving. We found one piece, that was a portrait, which my sister decided to hold on to. This afternoon I am going to go buy some gesso and stretcher bars at Blick so I can get down to business.

Hermit Girl

No posts since Friday–how dreadful!

I spent the weekend working on a paper that was due in my class yesterday. It feels so incredibly wonderful to be finished with it, and have an entire day free to do whatever I please! I plan on working on my painting (below). It is coming along pretty nicely, but it is due next Monday. I have so much work to do on it still! Painting classes can be so frustrating at times, I can never get as much work into a painting as I would like. Because I work with oils, a lot of times I have to wait for portions of the painting to dry before I can add more details or work on that section.

I have so much other things to catch up on as well before my last day of class next Wednesday….and as soon as I get out of class I am going to rush home, pack, and hop a plane to San Francisco. Exciting! Time is really going to fly this next week.

Here is where I plan on spending all my time until then.

B is for….

This is the page from my naughty ABC book that I finished a few days ago. I will probably re-illustrate it fifteen times before it is done, but here is what B looks like at this point!

ABCs for Little Girls

Last semester I took a drawing class at school. As our final project in class we had several options. The one I chose to do was to write and illustrate a book that parents would not approve of.

I decided to write an ABC book. I spent a really long time on it, but I could only illustrate it so well, since we only had a few short weeks to turn it in. The story turned out so well. Everyone I show it to laughs their pants off and wants a copy.

Since the semester ended I have been wanting to redraw many of the illustrations that I rushed through first time around. This morning I sat down and started on the first one. It is going to take me a while to complete this, but I really hope to get it published when I am done.

Mouse Preliminary Sketch

This is just a quick little preliminary sketch I did for the second of the two paintings due in class today.

Chicken Pocks and Lobsters

All morning I have worked on putting the finishing touches on two paintings I am working on. Tomorrow we have critique in class, and I have to present both. I am super excited with how these paintings are turning out, and can’t wait to share them with you. Hopefully this weekend there will be good light so I can get some nice photographs.

Along with presenting the two finished paintings, my proposal and sketches are due for my final project. The painting is to be a self portrait based on one of the several themes provided to us. I am choosing to incorporate text into my piece.

The picture I chose is from one of the saddest days of my life.  It was 1987 and my brother and sister both had horrible cases of chicken pocks. It was beginning to look like I wasn’t going to catch them. Then the day before my ballet performance as a lobster in Alice in Wonderland I came down with them. I remember parading around my house for weeks in my bright orange leotard and matching tutu. My heart broke when my parents told me I wasn’t going to be able to do the lobster dance.

So thats the story and the picture. I will be incorporating text about lobsters from Alice in Wonderland into the painting. Now I need to go finish up the other two so I can get started on this painting!
